Mr. Bird received his bachelor's degree in history from the University of Kansas in 1969 and his law degree from the University of Idaho in 1975. He was a co-editor of lead articles for the University of Idaho Law Review. In 1976, Mr. Bird began practicing law with the firm of Feder, Morris & Tamblyn, P.C. in Denver, Colorado. He joined Caplan and Earnest in 1979 and became a partner in 1982. He served as the managing partner of the firm for 1984-1985 and 1993-1997.
Mr. Bird practices in the areas of corporate and entity formation and representation (including profit, nonprofit and school district entities), business planning, sales and purchases of businesses, real estate transactions, estate planning and probate. He is a member of the American Bar Association, Colorado Bar Association, Boulder County Bar Association and the Boulder County Estate Planning Council and has lectured on estate planning and probate topics. Mr. Bird is admitted to practice in Colorado.
Throughout his professional career, Mr. Bird has been actively involved in community service by serving on the board of directors of Junior Achievement of Boulder County, the YMCA of Boulder County (vice president 1984) Rocky Mountain United Methodist Home Health Management and Boulder County Crime Stoppers (president 1992). In January 1998, Mr. Bird became a charter member of the Rotary Club of Boulder Flatirons.
On a pro bono basis, Mr. Bird has incorporated and obtained Section 501(c)(3) recognition from the IRS for the Boulder Chamber of Commerce Foundation, Boulder County Bar Foundation, National Air Quality Center (a think tank for improving air quality), Child and Family Advocacy Program (which assists victims of child abuse, primarily sexual abuse), the Robert Meals Medical Fund (which assists Boulder County residents needing transplant or other extraordinary operations) and The Business-Education Alliance (which supports local education and job opportunities for youth).
