Breaking News – Department of Homeland Security Announces Relief Efforts to Assist Haitians in Wake of the Earthquake of January 12, 2010.
The Department of Homeland Security has announced a series of temporary measures to assist those impacted by the Earthquake in Haiti on January 12. Among the temporary measures announced include:
· Granting of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) to Haitian nationals currently in the United States. This status, which extends for a period of 18 months, allows Haitians to lawfully remain in the United States and grants work authorization to qualified individuals.
· Introduction of special rules to admit certain orphans into the United States to live with relatives or adoptive parents.
· Expediting and providing favorable treatment where possible to certain applications filed by Haitians that are already in process with the Department of Homeland Security.
· Suspending deportations of Haitian nationals with a final order of removal to Haiti.
